Monell Chemical Senses Center, a renowned research institute dedicated to the study of taste and smell, is embarking on a significant transition as it relocates to University City. This move, which has been in the works for over half a century, marks a pivotal moment for the nonprofit organization, offering a fresh start and an opportunity to expand its scientific endeavors.
The center's current home on Market Street has served it well for 55 years, but the need for more space and modern facilities has become increasingly apparent. With a growing team of over 150 scientists and staff, the limitations of the existing building have become a bottleneck for innovation and collaboration. As Benjamin Smith, Monell's executive director and president, notes, "We’re just at capacity. We don’t have the facilities that are going to push us forward into the future."
The new location at One uCity Square presents a compelling solution. While the physical space is slightly smaller, the design prioritizes efficiency and collaboration. The open layout, filled with shared spaces, fosters a more interactive and dynamic environment, encouraging scientists to engage with one another and explore new research methods. This shift from the traditional academic lab setting is particularly exciting, as it opens doors for innovative collaborations with neighboring research and biotech companies, such as Dispatch Bio and Century Therapeutics.
One of the key advantages of the new facility is its ability to accommodate newer research methods, such as organoids, which are miniature versions of organs grown in the lab. The current building's limited cell culture space and imaging capabilities have been a constraint, but the new space will provide the necessary infrastructure to support these cutting-edge techniques. As Smith explains, "Our people are excited because we’re moving to facilities that are going to help them do more of the work that they want to do."

Monell's iconic "Face Fragment" sculpture, a beloved symbol of the center's legacy, will be relocated to the front of the One uCity building, where it will continue to inspire and engage the public.
